WHAT IS EDUROAM?
Eduroam is an acronym for Education Roaming. Using 802.1x security standards over a RADIUS-based infrastructure, it aims to enable users of eduroam member institutions to seamlessly use the network at other educational institutions.
Users at eduroam-member institutions can connect to the network from another eduroam-member institution (Guest Institution) using the same username and password combinations they use to connect to the network at their home institution (Home Institution). When a user sends a connection request to an eduroam broadcast received while at the guest institution, the guest institution's authorization server directs the user to their home institution's authorization server to determine authorization. All these queries are made through an encrypted tunnel between the servers, preventing the username and password combinations from being visible outside the user's home server. In this case, users simply define the eduroam wireless network at the guest institution as connecting to their home institution's network.
Eduroam member institutions send queries to the eduroam federations in their respective countries, and the federations in their respective countries send queries to the confederations they are affiliated with. This hierarchy allows each new federation and institution joining the European eduroam confederation, to which Türkiye is affiliated, and the APAN confederation, to be recognized by everyone involved. To view the participants in the confederations, please visit the eduroam website (http://www.eduroam.org.tr/).
In 2011, our university began establishing its wireless network access infrastructure and became a member of the EDUROAM (Education Roaming) Confederation, which unites the wireless access of numerous universities worldwide on a common platform. With this membership, our staff and students traveling to other eduroam-member institutions (domestic or international) will be able to access internet services at that institution using their university email username and password without needing to register. The same applies to international visitors visiting our university from eduroam-member institutions. More detailed information and a list of member institutions can be found at www.eduroam.org and www.eduroam.org.tr.
